Chapter Twenty-Two
I unzipped Willardâs carrier, and he hopped out as if he was happy to be home â but suddenly the fur on his back stood upright as he began to hiss.
Iâd never heard him hiss before.
I saw what he was looking at. In the corner of the living room stood a very dark shadow. I almost screamed, but then I heard the words, âPlease donât scream. Iâm not going to hurt you. I need your help - Iâm innocent.â
From the shadows Doctor Murphy emerged. He looked like he had seen a ghost. His face was an unhealthy pale color and his bloodshot eyes looked like they hadnât seen sleep in ages. His lips were dry with dehydration, and he looked exhausted as he suddenly fell down to his knees and started to sob.
âI wouldâve waited outside, but I think Joe Booth is looking for me. Iâm sorry to scare you, but I had nowhere else to go.â
âHow did you get in my apartment?â I asked.
âI came through your window - you should really keep it locked. Please, donât call the police. Theyâre not going to believe me. Sheriff Booth will never let his brother go down for this.â
âWhat do you want from me?â I asked hesitantly.
âI need a place to stay. Iâve never felt so tired in my life. I need to rest and come up with a plan. Sheriff Booth wants to lock me away.â
âHow do you know that?â
âI knew they were coming for me. I saw the sheriffâs car driving slowly up my driveway, followed by two more police cars. It was like they didnât want me to hear them coming. They had their lights off and they were driving so quietly. What I did next, I wonât be able to forgive myself for â I left my family there. I jumped out the back window and ran through the woods. I canât forgive myself for leaving them. But I had to do it. If I hadnât, then I know Iâd be in a cell right now, and then maybe Iâd never be able to see them again. At least now I can plan how to prove my innocence.â
âHow can you prove it?â
âI wish I knew. All I know is the truth, which is exactly what I told you yesterday. When I saw the sheriff creeping up my hill, I suspected the worst. I hope Iâm wrong. I hope they find her alive, but Iâm afraid they may have found what I was afraid of. Iâm afraid sheâs dead.â
âThey found her body, Doctor.â
âOh my God,â his eyes lit up like heâd seen a ghost and his mouth started to quiver violently as he wrapped his arms around his shaking torso. He looked up at me, sobbing, and said, âHow do you know that?â
âI talked to the sheriff. He approached me when I was leaving the hospital with my friends. Itâs a long story.â
âWait â Lylaâs really dead? Tell me itâs a sick joke.â
âI wouldnât joke about something like that, Doctor Murphy,â I said.
